Emergency Action Plan (E.A.P.)

Effective Date: [08/21/2025]

Purpose:
The purpose of this Emergency Action Plan is to provide clear instructions to prevent, respond to, and manage emergencies during hiking events. Safety is our top priority while fostering a faith-based, spiritually uplifting environment.

Communication Plan:

  • All hikers must carry a fully charged phone.

  • In areas without cell service, hikers should stay in groups and use walkie-talkies if provided.

  • Hike leaders will announce all emergency procedures before starting the trail.

1. Pre-Hike Safety Procedures 🏞️

  • Conduct a trail briefing, including:

    • Expected terrain and elevation changes

    • Approximate hiking time and rest stops

    • Potential hazards (wildlife, plants, streams, etc.)

  • Confirm that all participants have signed waivers and provided emergency contact info.

  • Ensure all hikers have:

    • Water & snacks

    • Weather-appropriate clothing

    • First aid kit access

    • Personal medications

  • Assign a buddy system: each hiker pairs with at least one other person.

2. Emergency Response Procedures ⚠️

A. Minor Injuries (scrapes, blisters, minor cuts)

  • Clean the wound with antiseptic from the first-aid kit.

  • Apply bandages or blister pads as needed.

  • Monitor the hiker and continue walking at a safe pace if possible.

B. Serious Injuries (sprains, fractures, head injuries)

  • Stop hiking immediately.

  • Keep the injured person calm and comfortable.

  • Administer first aid as appropriate; do not move if a spinal injury is suspected.

  • Contact emergency services (911) if required.

  • Notify hike leaders and document the incident.

C. Medical Emergencies (allergic reactions, heart issues, seizures)

  • Administer emergency medication if available (EpiPen, inhaler, etc.).

  • Call 911 immediately.

  • Keep the hiker stable and monitored until help arrives.

D. Lost or Separated Hiker

  • Hikers must stay on the trail.

  • Use a whistle or agreed-upon signal to communicate.

  • Leaders will organize a search team while keeping the rest of the group safe.

  • Contact local authorities if the hiker is not found quickly.

E. Severe Weather or Natural Hazards

  • Monitor weather reports before and during the hike.

  • If lightning, floods, or dangerous conditions occur:

    • Move to safe, low-risk areas

    • Cancel or evacuate the hike if necessary

    • Follow the instructions of hike leaders

3. Evacuation Plan 🏥

  • Hike leaders will identify primary and secondary exit routes before the hike.

  • Leaders will have a map, compass, and GPS device.

  • Injured or at-risk hikers will be evacuated via the safest available route.

  • Transport may include:

    • Personal vehicles

    • Emergency services (911)

  • Keep calm and organized to prevent further incidents.

4. Post-Emergency Procedures ✝️

  • Ensure all injured or affected hikers receive proper care.

  • Document the incident, including:

    • Date, time, and location

    • Hiker(s) involved

    • Nature of the emergency

    • Actions taken

    • Outcome
